Bee and I watched a TV special on North Korea reported by Diane Sawyer. North Korea seems like a terrifying place of Orwellian totalitarianism. It is stunning how a single party government has complete control of the masses and no one interviewed said a single negative thing about the Government. It is amazing how the masses can be enslaved and enraptured by a regime; how they can become robots ignorantly working in the machinations of a government, of a society, of a culture. There is absolutely no parallel between the North Koreans obedience to the Supreme Ruler, and our obedience to consumerism, media spin and the fear of terrorism. Millions of North Koreans participate and watch bizarre dance like pageants in superdomes. These quarterly pageants are designed to exalt the Supreme Ruler and North Korea as a country, a nation, a people. This is one hundred percent unlike the super bowl and the half time show with millions of Americans watching the game. There is no correlation between the North Koreans devotion for their Fearless Leader who is an heir of his dead fathers’ regime and George Bush, his supporters and his fathers’ legacy. There is no correlation what-so-ever. In fact, the great big difference in government is we have a two party system. They have only one. Clearly, they are much further down the tree of self-rule evolution than we are. In America we have freedom of choice so long as you pay your taxes and do not break any laws. In North Korea they have no choice but to do what they are taught is right. In North Korea, everyone is obsessively clean. Dianne Sawyer showed us children and adults sweeping the side walk and leaves from the grass with brooms. Haven’t they heard of rakes? In America we have immigrant works, low level criminals performing community service and poor people who can’t afford gardeners clean the sidewalks and lawns. I wonder if their cleanliness includes a ban on cigarette smoking and trans fat? In America, if you ask a stranger on the street about North Korea, they might say, ‘Bomb them back to the stone age. Kill them before they kill us. Sanctions, sanctions, sanctions.’ In North Korea when Dianne Sawyer asked people on the street what they think of America, they said with a polite smile, “America should stay out of North Korea” and shook her hand. There was also some reference to America being an Evil Empire and North Koreas supreme enemy. Of course, they were probably terrified to say anything else. Clearly, that type of behavior needs to be cleansed from the earth so America can spread the joy of Democratic consumerism and turn the entire planet into a shopping-mall-tourist attraction. Look at how well we are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan. Note: This tongue and cheek TV review is a sardonic self examination, which is still legal in America as far as I know. I would likely be killed if I was in North Korean writing the same type of blog. (Oh, that’s right. They do not have blogs.) I do not believe North Korea is like America, especially if you consider their history of human rights violations. (For the moment, just ignore Guantanamo, civilian causalities in Iraq and Katrina.) But, I do see similarities. I think, if there is to be a non-violent resolution of growing nuclear tensions, we need to look at our similarities and find a common ground, even if it means we have to admit our own short comings and take the higher road of “Love your enemy.” Fortunately, people more intelligent and wise than me deal with these issues. Hopefully, they can resolve the threat of nuclear attack with out invading another country. |
