I found myself working a blue collar job with my brother in-law Mac. He is a truck driver. I was in an apprentice program. We made a delivery to a grocery store still in construction. We drove the truck into the loading dock, but a curb and ten foot drop stopped us from proceeding. The outsourced Asian construction workers were annoyed at our presence. Deliveries weren’t supposed to start for another week. We had to unload as fast as possible and get to next stop for a pick up. Mac suggested we forge some numbers and invoice the company for delivery of the frozen green chicken nuggets. “We can’t do that. They’ll thaw out and then what?”

“What, nothing.” Mac said and unhooked the truck near a power outlet. He plugged the trailer in and we drove off.
“They’ve got GPS tracking you know. They will see the truck is stationary and you’re going to get nailed for this.”

“No, I’m not.” Mac tossed the tracking bug into my lap.

Back at the main office, the management called me aside. They read my resume and decided they wanted to me to help set up barcode tracking of their inventory using an obsolete Apple based bar code scanner they bought on Ebay. I enjoyed the fact my technical background elevated me from the driver apprentice program, but I was annoyed they wanted to use junk hardware and obsolete software. There wasn’t much to do, other than make lemonade. But, I soon found out lemonade could not be made. Their PC’s did not have the right serial ports the Apple scanners. The project was destined to fail, as well as my new career choice.

The dream shifted elewhere.
